Speaker Obasa’s Political Manipulation Threatens Stability Of APC In Lagos

3 min read

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has aggressively pursued his political ambitions, manifested in attempts to undermine anyone he perceives as a threat, regardless of their standing within the party. His leadership of the Lagos Assembly has been marked by an autocratic grip, allowing no progress unless it aligns with his interests.

Since the beginning of the 10th Assembly, there has been a noticeable lack of meaningful development. Any member who displays initiative or intelligence is swiftly suppressed. Obasa views such members as threats to his control and his pursuit of the governorship, leading to a stifling atmosphere where members are reduced to mere followers, reminiscent of students following orders.

Obasa’s tactics have even extended to physical intimidation. Allegedly, he directed party thugs to assault the APC Chairman in Lagos, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, who is also the chairman of all APC State Chairmen in Nigeria. Following this incident, Obasa sought forgiveness from the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), claiming that the thugs, part of a faction within the APC in Alimosho, were not the first to err.

He drew comparisons with the Enilolobo-led Mandate Movement in Alimosho, accusing them of working for the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, which he claims led to the APC’s loss in Alimosho. This assertion has been repeatedly challenged, particularly when Obasa failed to explain APC losses in other areas like Ikeja, Ojo, and Oshodi-Isolo, as well as key states like Kaduna and Kano, where APC previously dominated under President Buhari.

Obasa’s desperation is reminiscent of past leaders who overreached, such as former Lagos Speaker Rt. Hon. Pelumi, who faded into obscurity after misusing Assembly power. Unlike Pelumi, Obasa’s influence extends beyond the Assembly into the party itself, and he appears willing to cause significant internal strife if his demands are not met.

This behaviour serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked ambition. As we await intervention from party leaders at both state and national levels, it is crucial to remember that power ultimately resides with the people. This principle is what sets the APC apart and must be upheld to ensure the party’s continued success and unity.

Moreover, Obasa’s actions undermine the democratic values that the APC stands for. The essence of democracy is participation and inclusiveness, where every voice matters, and no single individual wields disproportionate power. Obasa’s autocratic style contradicts these values, creating an environment of fear and suppression that stifles innovation and progress.

The APC’s strength lies in its diversity and the collective efforts of its members. A party that allows autocratic behaviour to flourish risks alienating its members and eroding the trust and unity that are essential for its success. Therefore, it is imperative for the APC to take a stand against such behaviour, reinforcing its commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

In conclusion, Speaker Obasa’s political manipulation threatens not only the stability of the APC in Lagos but also the very foundation of democratic governance within the party. It is a call to action for all party members to reaffirm their dedication to democratic ideals and to ensure that leadership is exercised with integrity, transparency, and respect for all members. This is the path to true progress and sustained success for the APC.
