Awolowo Market: Sagamu Authorities Roll Out Urgent Security Reforms

Authorities have moved to address growing security concerns at Awolowo Market following repeated cases of shop burglaries and recent fire outbreaks affecting traders.

The intervention came after an inspection visit to the market by the local government leadership, accompanied by members of the cabinet and the Head of Local Government Administration, to assess the situation and engage directly with affected traders.

During the visit, officials interacted with traders to better understand the challenges confronting them, particularly the increasing vulnerability of shops to theft and fire hazards.

Subsequently, a strategic meeting was convened at the Local Government Secretariat with market executives and board members to deliberate on sustainable solutions to the issues raised.

At the meeting, it was unanimously resolved that traders with weak or wooden shop doors must replace them with iron steel doors within 14 days of receiving official notice. The measure, according to stakeholders, is aimed at strengthening security and preventing further break-ins.

In addition, a Security Committee was constituted to tackle the rising incidents. The committee, to be chaired by the Babaloja, Mr. Adubiagbe Babatunde, has been mandated to design and implement effective strategies to safeguard lives and property within the market.

Speaking at the meeting, the council leadership emphasized that ensuring safety in the market is a shared responsibility, urging all traders to adopt a proactive approach by seeing themselves as key stakeholders in maintaining security.

The leadership also stressed the importance of transparency, mutual respect, and open communication among market stakeholders. In a bid to enhance coordination and responsiveness, market executive meetings—reportedly inactive since the emergence of the current leadership—have been directed to resume immediately.

In a positive development, the market executives held their first meeting shortly after the engagement, where members reportedly reconciled and reaffirmed their commitment to unity, peace, and the overall development of Awolowo Market.

The renewed efforts are expected to restore confidence among traders and ensure a safer, more secure trading environment.
