Senate Reduces Notice Of Election Publication Timeline

The Nigerian Senate has approved a reduction in the timeline for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish notices of election, shortening it from 360 days to 180 days.

The development follows the adoption of a motion moved by Senator Tahir Monguno, who argued that the original 360-day period was too long and could delay INEC’s preparations for the next general election.

According to Monguno, the shorter timeline would ensure that INEC meets its statutory obligations regarding election notice publication.

“With the reduction from 360 to 180 days, INEC will have sufficient time to properly notify the public about upcoming elections while ensuring all logistical and administrative requirements are met,” Monguno said.

The amendment means that INEC now has more time left to publish the official notice for the 2027 general elections, aligning the electoral process with the realities of election planning and management in the country.

The move has been welcomed by stakeholders who believe it will enhance electoral preparedness and reduce the risk of delays that could disrupt the election timetable.

This change comes amid broader discussions on electoral reforms aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and credibility in Nigeria’s voting process.
