IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Appeals Life Sentence

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed an appeal against his conviction and life sentence.

According to his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, the appeal was lodged personally by Kanu on Wednesday, 4th February 2026. Ejimakor confirmed the development via a post on his verified X handle, stating:

“The mother of all appeals has been filed, as MAZI NNAMDI KANU personally appeals against his conviction/sentence today, the 4th of February 2026.”

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, following his conviction on charges related to terrorism and treasonable felony.

The court’s decision sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria and the diaspora.
The appeal marks the latest legal step in Kanu’s effort to challenge the ruling, which has been a focal point in ongoing discussions about separatist movements, human rights, and the Nigerian judiciary’s handling of high-profile political cases.

Stakeholders and observers are closely monitoring the appeal, which is expected to be argued before a higher court in the coming weeks.
