Lionel Messi Secures Record 2023 Ballon d’Or Award Following World Cup Triumph
Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has claimed the 2023 Ballon d’Or, extending his record and adding another illustrious accolade to his name. The victory comes on the heels of his triumph in the 2022 World Cup.
The Inter Miami player was officially crowned as the recipient of the prestigious Ballon d’Or on Monday evening, during a ceremony held in the enchanting city of Paris, France. This achievement is widely viewed as a well-deserved recognition of his instrumental role in guiding Argentina to World Cup glory last year.
At the age of 36, Messi succeeds Karim Benzema as the winner of the coveted award, recognizing his exceptional performances in the previous season when he inspired Argentina to claim the World Cup.
Messi’s remarkable displays in Qatar, where he carried his nation to a triumphant victory, solidified his claim to the award, edging out strong competition, notably Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
In the final voting, Haaland secured the second spot, with Mbappe landing in third place, and Kevin De Bruyne in fourth.
The former Barcelona superstar delivered a stunning performance at the World Cup, netting seven goals, and was rightfully named the tournament’s standout player, especially after Argentina defeated France in a thrilling final match in Doha.
However, Messi’s final season at Paris Saint-Germain was somewhat underwhelming before his move to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
His former PSG teammate, Kylian Mbappe, also made a compelling case with his outstanding World Cup performances, where he emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals, including a hat-trick in the final for France.
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland had a sensational season, scoring an incredible 52 goals in 53 games for Manchester City, contributing to the club’s remarkable treble win in the English Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Both Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne were among the nominees from the City team, reflecting the outstanding collective performance of their squad.
