Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their campaign for a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their African qualifying tie on Friday.

The encounter took place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, with Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu scoring in the second half to give Nigeria a two-goal advantage ahead of the return fixture.

After a goalless first half, Alozie broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, finishing after Gift Monday had brought the ball down in the attacking area.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Kanu headed home from a corner delivered by Jennifer Echegini.

The Super Falcons had created several opportunities before the break, including a chance involving captain Rasheedat Ajibade, but could not find the net in the opening 45 minutes.

The victory gives Nigeria an advantage going into the second leg, scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, at the same venue. The aggregate winner will progress to the next stage of the African qualification series.

Both matches are being played in Nigeria because Comoros does not have a venue approved by the Confederation of African Football for international fixtures.

Nigeria, 10-time African champions, are seeking to qualify for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. However, the victory over Comoros is only an initial step in a qualification campaign that requires further wins to secure an Olympic place.
