UNILAG Announces Fee Reductions Following Talks With Student Leaders

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has decided to revise its recently increased fees following a meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Readership NG reports.

UNILAG’s management, led by Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola, engaged with student leaders, including NANS President Usman Barambu, in an effort to address the ongoing fee-related issues.

Previously, the university had raised fees from N26,000 to N120,750 and from N76,000 to N240,250, depending on the program and year of admission. However, in an official statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, the institution announced reductions in various fees, including utility charges and convocation fees.

Utility charges for all students have been decreased to N15,000 from N20,000, and convocation fees for final-year students were reduced to N27,000 from N30,000. Obligatory fees for new undergraduate students were adjusted from N126,325 to N116,325 for courses without lab/studio and from N176,325 to N166,325 for courses with lab/studio. Similarly, returning undergraduate students saw their obligatory fees reduced from N100,750 to N80,750 for courses without lab/studio, from N140,250 to N120,250 for courses with lab/studio, and from N190,250 to N170,250 for medical/pharmacy students and health professions students.

Hostel fees were also revised for undergraduate hostels in the Akoka and Yaba campuses, dropping from N90,000 to N43,000, and for Idi-Araba campus hostels, reduced N120,000 to N65,000. Additionally, Sodeinde Hall fees were reduced from N250,000 to N135,000.

Furthermore, the university noted that, apart from fee adjustments, the NANS President also called for the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government in UNILAG, which had been dissolved in 2016 following a student protest.
