Tinubu Celebrates Afrobeat Legend Fela Kuti’s Grammy Honour

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as an eternal global icon following his posthumous recognition with the Recording Academy of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

In a statement issued from the State House on February 1, 2026, the President said the prestigious Grammy honour affirms Fela’s enduring global influence and his foundational role in shaping modern music from Africa to the rest of the world.

President Tinubu noted that Fela was more than a musician, portraying him as a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom and a revolutionary figure whose music boldly confronted injustice and redefined global sound. According to him,

Fela’s courage, creativity and deep convictions not only defined a generation but continue to inspire artists and audiences across continents.

The President highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of the moment, stating that in Yoruba mythology, Fela has transcended to a higher plane as an Orisa, symbolising his immortality through art and legacy.

By receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Fela Kuti became the first African to be so honoured by the Recording Academy, albeit posthumously. President Tinubu described the recognition as a landmark moment for Nigeria and Africa, underscoring Fela’s pivotal role in defining Afrobeat and influencing generations of Nigerian musicians, as well as the global Afrobeats movement.

“Fela lives,” the President declared, stressing that the Afrobeat legend’s music, message and spirit remain timeless and indestructible.
