Real Reasons Ogun Lawmakers Impeached Olakunle Oluomo
2 min readAdditional details have surfaced surrounding the events leading to the impeachment of Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo.
As reported by Readership NG, Oluomo was ousted from his position on Tuesday, and Hon. Oludaisi Elemide was appointed as the new Speaker. The impeachment was accompanied by accusations against Oluomo, including financial impropriety and inadequate leadership of the state Assembly.
Hon. Soneye Damilola Kayode, who represents Obafemi Owode Constituency, provided further insight into the situation. According to Kayode, Oluomo had falsely claimed that Governor Dapo Abiodun was not providing funds to the House. Members later discovered that Oluomo had not been transparent about the financial support from the governor, accusing him of embezzling the funds intended for the lawmakers.
Kayode revealed that Oluomo consistently misled the members, stating that the governor had not approved any funds for them, leading them to endure financial constraints. Contrary to Oluomo’s statements, it was found that the governor had indeed been providing financial support. Allegedly, Oluomo received funds from the governor, only to falsely assert otherwise to the members, resulting in financial mismanagement and embezzlement.
One specific instance highlighted by Kayode involved the quarters allowance meant for renovation. Although the governor had allocated funds for the purpose, Oluomo was accused of embezzling the remaining amount.
In response to these allegations, 18 members united and expressed their dissatisfaction with Oluomo’s actions. They accused him of inciting discord among members and mishandling resources. Consequently, the House underwent a change in leadership, with Hon. Elemide assuming the role of Speaker. The members have called on Oluomo to address the allegations and clear his name with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
