Ogun Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo Impeached

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, who represents Ifo 1 state constituency, has been removed from office through impeachment.
The swift replacement for Oluomo is Hon. Oludaisi Elemide from Odeda state constituency, both of whom are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The impeachment proceedings took place during a plenary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi from Yewa South state constituency. Adegoke Adeyanju from Yewa North 1 moved the motion for the speaker’s impeachment, seconded by Mr. Ademola Adeniran Sagamu II state constituency.
Adeyanju, accompanied by fellow lawmakers, entered the Assembly chamber with the mace. The lawmakers, appearing determined, promptly engaged in the legislative business focused on impeaching Mr. Oluomo. Eighteen out of the 26 members voted in favor of the impeachment.
The Clerk and Deputy Clerk, Mr. Deji Adeyemo and Mrs. Funmilayo Adeyemi, respectively, were also present at the plenary.
After his emergence as the new speaker, Elemide assured the public of his commitment to responsible leadership, emphasizing that the new leadership would support the governor. He clarified that the governor was not involved in the impeachment decision, asserting that it was the legislators’ choice.
Damilola Soneye, representing Obafemi Owode state constituency, explained to reporters that the Speaker’s removal was due to alleged gross misconduct, including high-handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, financial misappropriation, and inciting members against each other.
Security personnel, including policemen and officers from the Department of State Services (DSS), were present in significant numbers to prevent any potential disruption of law and order during the proceedings.
