PDP Alleges Political Cover-Up In Ongoing Sagamu Killings Investigation
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has issued a scathing press release, alleging a cover-up in the investigation into recent violence and killings in Sagamu town. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Asiwaju Akinloye Bankole, expressed deep concerns about the release of certain individuals while a key opposition figure remains in detention, Readership NG reports.
The press release, issued by Mr. Bankole, highlights the case of Mr. Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, and Mr. Afolabi Odulate, the Chairman of Sagamu Local Government. Both individuals had been connected to the incidents in Sagamu, where more than 20 lives were reportedly lost.
According to the PDP, Mr. Odulate, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has been linked to some of the cultists involved in the violence. Despite this alleged connection, he was released from custody. This has raised questions about the impartiality of the investigation and has led to accusations of political interference.
Of particular concern to the PDP is the continued detention of Hon. Damilare Bello, also known as “DRE,” the representative of Sagamu 1 State Constituency. He was arrested alongside Mr. Odulate but remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The PDP’s press release strongly condemns what it perceives as undue political influence in the case. It questions why individuals with alleged links to criminal activities have been released while opposition figures remain in detention. The party alleges that there is a deliberate plot to protect members of the ruling APC.
Mr. Bankole points out that this is not the first time Mr. Odulate has faced arrest by security agencies. During the March 18, 2023 election, Mr. Odulate was reportedly arrested with dangerous weapons, but he was later released.
The press release concludes by calling for transparency and justice in the investigation, and it expresses concern about the security situation in Ogun State. The PDP accuses the Department of State Services (DSS) of being influenced by political forces.
This development adds to the political tensions between the PDP and APC in Ogun State, as both parties continue to exchange accusations in connection with the recent security incidents. The press release serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in the Nigerian political landscape.
