Oyetibo, Falana, Banire, Others Represent Lawmakers In Lagos Speakership Battle

Thirty-five lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who supported the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, arrived at the Lagos State High Court for a hearing on Obasa’s legal challenge against his ouster.

Obasa had filed a suit contesting his removal by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025. In an application dated February 12, 2025, his legal representative, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), argued that Obasa was removed while he was out of the country.

Representing Speaker Mojisola Meranda and the House are a team of senior lawyers, including lead counsel Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), alongside Mr. Olu Daramola (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Dr. Dada Awosika (SAN), Prof. Dayo Amokaye (SAN), Mr. Mofe Oyetibo (SAN), Mr. Olumide Oyewole, and Mr. Wunmi Okeremi.

At the time of filing this report, the lawmakers had taken their seats in court, awaiting the hearing.

Meanwhile, the House of Assembly has condemned what it described as an “invasion” by Obasa and three lawmakers who attempted to hold an unauthorized plenary session.

In a statement issued on Friday by House spokesman Hon. Steve Ogundipe, the Assembly reaffirmed that plenary sessions require formal notice, a quorum, an approved agenda, and the mace. “None of these procedural requirements were met during the purported session, with only five out of 40 members present, rendering it unconstitutional and without legislative effect,” the statement read.

The Assembly reiterated its commitment to upholding legislative integrity and maintaining democratic governance. It also reaffirmed full support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, dismissing any claims of her resignation as false.

The House aligned itself with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in resolving internal issues and assured Lagosians of its continued focus on legislative responsibilities and good governance.
