JUST IN: Senate Approves Emergency Rule In Rivers

The Senate, like the House of Representatives, has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, exercising its constitutional authority under the amended 1999 Constitution.
With this approval, President Tinubu is empowered to implement emergency measures, subject to periodic review, with a mandatory reassessment within six months.
In accordance with the Constitution, the National Assembly has also established a joint committee from both chambers to oversee governance in Rivers State throughout the emergency period.
Furthermore, the Senate has agreed to form a mediation committee comprising distinguished Nigerians to facilitate a resolution to the state’s political crisis.
