BREAKING: Senate In Emergency Session Over Emergency Rule In Rivers

The Senate has commenced an executive session over a correspondence received from President Bola Tinubu at the start of the plenary, formally seeking constitutional approval for a state of emergency proclamation in Rivers State.

During the session, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele invoked Order 1(b) to adjust the order of proceedings and address the request at hand.

At this point, Senator Seriake Dickson raised a point of order, prompting a response from the Senate President, who noted that he had previously seen Senator Dickson on television expressing concerns about aligning with the Senate’s position.

After a brief exchange, Senator Dickson was allowed to speak, where he clarified that his intention was to reference specific provisions within the Senate rules.

Referring to Order 133, he emphasized that discussions on a state of emergency require the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to provide lawmakers with a briefing on the circumstances leading to the proclamation in a private session.

Following this, the Senate transitioned into a closed-door meeting.
