A fire outbreak has gutted part of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property reportedly worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the Command’s facility in Apapa. The report of the fire was published by The Nation, which cited the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as its source.

According to the report, the fire started at about 10:23 a.m. and was suspected to have originated from an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading to other sections of the building.

Customs officers on duty reportedly made efforts to contain the blaze before personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 10:45 a.m. to assist in putting out the fire.

The incident occurred as Deputy Comptroller Timothy Jonah was taking over the affairs of the Western Marine Command from his predecessor. Jonah described the development as unfortunate, saying he had just resumed when the fire outbreak occurred.

He said the Command would constitute a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while stressing the need to turn the setback into an opportunity to strengthen its operations.

Jonah also commended the Customs personnel who responded to the emergency and their collaboration with the fire service. He said measures would be taken to improve safety protocols and reduce the possibility of a similar incident occurring in the future.
