FG Orders Immediate Night Repairs On Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate commencement of night-time repair works on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road to address severe deterioration and restore smooth traffic flow along the busy corridor.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, during an inspection of the federal highway linking Lagos and Ogun states on Monday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Umahi disclosed that the intervention followed an assessment of about 22 kilometres of the road, with urgent palliative works to be carried out on approximately 18 kilometres identified as the most distressed sections.

He explained that while the Federal Government is already handling about 60 kilometres of the corridor, repairs are being executed in phases based on urgency and available resources.

The minister attributed the persistent failures on the road to unresolved concession arrangements and poor engineering judgments during earlier construction phases.

According to him, the immediate palliative works would commence without delay, largely at night, to minimise traffic disruption and focus on sections currently impeding the free movement of vehicles.

“The Federal Government has ordered the immediate commencement of palliative works on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road to address critical failures and restore traffic flow,” the NAN report quoted the minister as saying.

Umahi added that low-lying and failed sections of the road would be reconstructed using concrete to enhance durability, noting that the Ota-bound carriageway is more severely damaged than the Lagos-bound side.

He further revealed that a second phase of the project would involve full resurfacing of the road, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights.

The minister also assured road users that the concessionaire would operate and maintain the highway upon completion of the repair works.

In October 2023, the Federal Government approved the redevelopment of the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road under the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), which allows state governments or private concessionaires to reconstruct federal roads, recover costs through tolling for a defined period, and remit proceeds to the Federation Account.
