Family Suspends Burial Plans For Gospel Singer Omije Ojumi
Plans for the burial of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, have been suspended following unresolved issues within her family.
The development was announced on Saturday by fellow gospel artiste Lanre Alewilese via his Instagram page, where he disclosed that all arrangements made by the burial planning committee had been put on hold.
Alewilese explained that the decision became necessary due to internal family issues, stressing that the suspension was not a personal action but a collective resolution reached by the family and the committee overseeing the burial.
“All plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu, also known as Omije Ojumi, have been totally cancelled due to issues arising from within her family,” he stated.
He added that Nigerians were being formally informed of the change and assured the public that fresh details would be communicated once the family reached a final decision.
Prior to the suspension, burial activities were scheduled to take place in Lagos, including a service of songs, candlelight procession and tribute night at the LTV 8 Ground in Ikeja on Tuesday, January 20, followed by a private interment on Wednesday, January 21.
In a follow-up video message delivered in Yoruba, Alewilese reiterated that the Tuesday and Wednesday programmes earlier announced had been placed on hold, pending further directives from the family.
Bunmi Akinnaanu passed away on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital. Her death was announced by gospel singer Ayo Melody in a statement issued on behalf of the family, which described her passing as a great loss to the gospel music community.
Fondly called Omije Ojumi after her widely celebrated gospel song, Akinnaanu began singing at a young age before leaving her banking career to pursue gospel music full-time.
In October 2025, a video circulated online showing the singer during prayers at a church service in Ibadan over an undisclosed ailment. However, no official link has been established between the illness and her death.
The family is expected to announce new burial arrangements at a later date.
