Embattled Ogun LG Chair Wale Adedayo Impeached
The suspended chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Wale Adedayo, has faced impeachment proceedings initiated by councillors, who accused him of financial misappropriation and diverting council funds, Readership NG reports.
These allegations were detailed in a letter signed by Fasheyi Akindele, the leader of the Ijebu East Local Government house.
After several invitations to appear before the House, which Adedayo allegedly ignored, he finally appeared before the legislative council.
During this hearing, Adedayo reportedly confessed before the 11-member council that he had diverted federal allocations meant for the council and used them for unauthorized purposes, going against the state government’s approval.
Furthermore, Adedayo acknowledged that he continued to spend council funds until August 2023, even though the budget was only approved until March 2023, violating local laws. He also admitted to using N5.2 million meant for 290 chairs and tables to produce only 20 pieces, contrary to the state government’s approved allocation.
Regarding the issue of illegal levies and stickers for commercial transport operators in the LG, Adedayo claimed to have believed a bill had been passed on this matter. However, Akindele reminded him that such a bill, if passed, would require joint signatures from both the leader of the house and the council chairman.
It was concluded that after about three hours of deliberation, the chairman should be impeached. The vote resulted in five councillors in favour of impeachment, four against, and one abstention. Consequently, the leader of the house announced Adedayo’s impeachment as the chairman of Ijebu East LG.
In response, the impeached chairman maintained that the councillors were following a predetermined script.
“I told them this morning they were acting a script written by those in Abeokuta. All the documents about the allegations against me are in the office. But I know Mr. Governor is offended that we opened up to the public about how the federal allocation belonging to Ijebu East Local Government was being spent,” he said.
“I have done my duty as an Afenifere by letting our Leader know why we have not been able to do much since we got into office. The rest is for the court to decide,” Adedayo added.
