The Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) has called on leaders at all levels of government to ensure that democracy translates into tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians, stressing that security, justice and economic prosperity must remain the ultimate dividends of democratic governance.
In a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the National President of NASRE, Comrade Femi Oyewale, said while Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule remains a significant achievement, many citizens continue to face economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and declining purchasing power.
The association joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a historic symbol of electoral justice, national unity and the collective aspiration for a democratic society built on freedom, accountability and equal opportunity.
NASRE acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day address and commended his recognition of the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The association paid tribute to key figures of the June 12 struggle, including Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Bola Ige, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti and Frank Kokori, among others, for their sacrifices in advancing democratic governance in the country.
It also commended members of the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, intelligence agencies and other security personnel for their continued efforts in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
According to NASRE, traditional rulers, religious leaders, labour unions, civil society organisations, journalists and community stakeholders have also played vital roles in sustaining peace and democratic governance.
Despite these achievements, the association noted that democracy should not be measured solely by elections or the existence of democratic institutions.
“The true test of democracy lies in its ability to improve the quality of life of the people,” the statement said.
While acknowledging the Federal Government’s position that ongoing economic reforms are beginning to yield positive results, NASRE observed that many Nigerians are yet to experience the benefits, citing rising food prices, high transportation costs, unstable electricity supply and growing youth unemployment as major concerns.
The association urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to ensure that economic growth becomes more inclusive and that the gains of reform policies translate into real benefits for citizens.
It further called for accelerated job creation and stronger social protection programmes to support vulnerable Nigerians affected by economic adjustment measures.
On security, NASRE welcomed increased investment in defence and the recruitment of additional security personnel but expressed concern over continued incidents of kidnapping, violent crimes, communal clashes and attacks on communities across the country.
The association advocated improved intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency collaboration, community-based security initiatives and greater accountability in the management of security resources.
“The recent abductions and attacks in parts of the country serve as painful reminders that security remains a fundamental requirement for national development. Nigerians deserve to live, work, learn and travel without fear,” it stated.
As preparations intensify for upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, NASRE urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties and voters to uphold the principles of free, fair, peaceful and credible elections.
The association also called on public office holders to embrace transparency, accountability and responsible governance, while advocating the full implementation of local government autonomy to strengthen grassroots development.
Addressing Nigerian youths, NASRE encouraged active participation in governance, entrepreneurship, innovation and civic engagement, noting that the country’s future cannot be built through political apathy.
It equally urged media practitioners to remain committed to responsible journalism, factual reporting and accountability, describing a vibrant and independent press as essential to democratic survival.
The association further appealed to Nigerians to reject ethnic, religious and political divisions and renew their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence and the rule of law.
“As we honour the sacrifices of our democratic heroes, leaders at all levels must remember that the ultimate purpose of governance is service to the people. The dividends of democracy must be reflected in safer communities, quality education, accessible healthcare, reliable infrastructure, decent jobs and a better standard of living for all Nigerians,” NASRE stated.
It concluded by saying that while democracy has survived in Nigeria, the collective challenge remains making it work better for every citizen.
