Ondo Police Defend Idanre Arrest, Order Probe Into Corruption Allegations

The Ondo State Police Command has defended the legality of the recent arrest of six suspected fraudsters in Idanre over an alleged “miracle scam,” insisting that due process was strictly followed in carrying out the operation.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Command, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the arrest was conducted in line with established criminal investigation procedures and operational guidelines. The Command was responding to allegations published by Sahara Reporters on March 2, 2026, questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

According to the police, the suspects voluntarily made confessional statements in both written and video-recorded formats, admitting their alleged involvement in the offence. The Command noted that the statements were obtained in compliance with extant legal provisions and would form part of the evidence in the prosecution of the case.

Despite dismissing claims of wrongdoing, the Command said it had ordered a “thorough, impartial and transparent” investigation into the allegations to establish the true facts. It called on aggrieved parties to come forward with detailed information and supporting evidence to assist the ongoing probe, assuring that the review would be comprehensive and independent.

The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, was quoted as categorically denying ever directing anyone to collect money for any purpose, describing such conduct as contrary to the ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force and the Command’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption.

Reaffirming its commitment to community-centred policing and the protection of lives and property across the state, the Command assured residents that any officer or individual found culpable after investigations would be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law. It also urged members of the public to continue cooperating with the police and to channel complaints or credible information through appropriate platforms as efforts to maintain peace and public trust continue.
