Sanwo-Olu Approves 13% Increase In BRT Fares

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and other standard bus routes across the state.

The decision, sanctioned by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, followed appeals from regulated public transport operators who cited rising operational costs and economic pressures affecting their services.

In a statement, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said the fare adjustment would apply to all Bus Reform Initiative schemes, including BRT and standard routes. The new rates are scheduled to take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.

The government explained that the review aligns with the state’s annual fare adjustment framework and is intended to ease the financial strain on operators amid persistent inflationary trends. It noted that Nigeria’s inflation rate closed 2025 at 15.2 per cent, according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.

According to LAMATA, Bus Operating Companies have grappled with increased expenses such as vehicle maintenance, spare parts procurement and staff salaries, which have risen further following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.

The authority added that operators are investing in newer, cleaner and more fuel efficient buses to improve passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.

While acknowledging the impact on commuters, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to balancing affordability with the provision of safe, reliable and efficient public transportation, describing the adjustment as necessary to ensure long term sustainability and improved service delivery across Lagos.
