2027: Kwankwaso, Atiku, Obi Team Up To Oust Tinubu

In a strategic political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), signaling his intention to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and align with key opposition figures.

The move positions Kwankwaso alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and former governors Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi within the ADC. Analysts suggest the alliance could significantly boost the opposition’s chances, citing the fragmented vote in 2023 as a key factor in the ruling party’s victory.

In 2023, Atiku polled 6,984,520 votes, Obi garnered 6,101,533 votes, and Kwankwaso secured 1,496,687 votes. Analysts argue that a united front under one party could have outperformed Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who won with 8,794,726 votes.

For nearly three years, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has consolidated power across major states, raising concerns of a potential one-party dominance. Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, and Rivers states now have APC governors, while resource-rich states like Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta are fully under APC control. Kwankwaso’s defection removes one of the few remaining obstacles for the ruling party in Kano.

According to Mansur Kurugu, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the decision is driven by national interest rather than personal ambition. He described the move as part of the “Save Nigeria Project,” aiming to create a strong opposition capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative government. Kurugu emphasized that Kwankwaso remains flexible regarding his role in the coalition, whether as presidential or vice-presidential candidate, depending on strategic arrangements.

Kwankwaso has held consultations with Atiku and Aregbesola, focusing on coalition-building, power-sharing, and strengthening party structures to prevent fragmentation. Observers see his move as a critical step in unifying opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC has increasingly emerged as a platform for opposition collaboration, offering Kwankwaso a broader arena for influence, enhanced negotiating power, and relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

The new coalition reflects a growing focus on unity and strategic alliances as opposition figures seek to challenge APC dominance and offer voters a cohesive alternative in 2027.
