UPDATED: Gov Abiodun Announces The Passing Of Awujale Of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced the death of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. The revered monarch passed on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
In a statement issued by the governor, Oba Adetona was described as a towering figure whose reign brought immense transformation to Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.
“This is a moment of profound grief,” Governor Abiodun said. “Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was more than a royal father—he was a visionary leader who ruled with wisdom, courage, and deep love for his people.”
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old and went on to become one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. His reign was marked by significant progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural development.
Governor Abiodun noted the painful coincidence of Oba Adetona’s passing on the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari died in a London hospital.
Under Oba Adetona’s leadership, Ijebuland not only witnessed sustained peace and development but also gained global recognition through initiatives like the internationally renowned Ojude Oba festival, which he strongly promoted as a symbol of unity and cultural pride.
“His contributions will never be forgotten,” the governor added. “We will continue to uphold the ideals and values he instilled in us.”
