Senate Frowns At National Grid Shutdown

1 min read

The Senate has expressed worry over the shutdown of the national grid by the Organised Labour during the nationwide strike for a new minimum wage. The upper chamber of the National Assembly lamented the implications of the action on the nation’s economy.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, acknowledged the concerns of the lawmakers and halted a debate on the industrial action, noting that shutting down the grid was tantamount to economic sabotage.

The Senate’s concern comes after a motion by Senator Diket Plang, urging the Federal Government to expedite action on the new minimum wage to halt the industrial unrest. The Senate President commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for calling off the strike to enable negotiations to continue.

The Senate has promised to do its best to ensure the minimum wage bill is enacted for the benefit of all Nigerians. The development comes after the Organised Labour suspended its strike following last-minute talks with the Federal Government.
