Protests Will Worsen Economic Hardship, Says Mandate Movement In Urgent Appeal

2 min read

In light of recent announcements regarding a planned nationwide protest to address economic hardship, the Lagos State Chairman of The Mandate Movement, Abdullahi Ayinde Enilolobo, has issued a strong caution against such actions.

Enilolobo, in his message conveyed through a chieftain of the group, Prince Adewale Arogundade, emphasized the potential adverse effects on the economy, national security, and public safety that could result from the protest.

The Mandate Movement recognizes the severe economic challenges currently faced by many Nigerians. However, the group highlights the dedicated efforts of both the federal government, led by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Lagos State government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These administrations have demonstrated a commitment to addressing the plight of citizens through various interventionist initiatives and palliative measures aimed at cushioning the effects of hunger and economic strain.

“We understand the frustrations and hardships that many Nigerians are experiencing,” the statement began. “However, resorting to nationwide protests is not the solution. Such actions are likely to exacerbate tensions and potentially lead to violent clashes, thereby undermining economic growth, national security, and public order.”

The Mandate Movement stressed that protests, while a constitutional right, can often be hijacked by subversive elements with ulterior motives, leading to chaos and destruction. “It’s a known fact that certain individuals with a grudge against the current political leadership will exploit the planned protest to destabilize the country. We urge parents and guardians to restrain their children and wards from participating in these protests,” the statement added.

The group also pointed to several measures already implemented by the Tinubu administration to ameliorate the economic situation. These include the removal of duties on essential food items, the introduction of a more than 100% increase in the minimum wage for civil servants, and the implementation of a student loan scheme to ease the financial burden on families.

“We appeal to all Nigerians to remain patient and give these policies time to manifest fully. The government is working tirelessly to turn the economy around, and this will not happen overnight,” the statement continued. “The recent measures are just the beginning of a broader strategy to ensure long-term economic stability and growth.”

The Mandate Movement called for unity and collective effort in overcoming the current economic challenges. “Let us support the government’s efforts to build a sustainable economic model that benefits all Nigerians. Protests will only divert attention and resources away from these critical initiatives and delay the progress we all desire.”

In concluding their statement, the group emphasized the importance of dialogue and constructive engagement with the government. “We urge all citizens to engage in meaningful discussions with their leaders at all levels. Constructive dialogue, rather than protests, will help us achieve the positive changes we seek for our nation. Let us work together to build a stable, secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
