PDP Kicks As Thugs, Gunshots Mar Ogun Bye-Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has condemned what it described as widespread violence during Saturday’s Federal Constituency bye-election in Sagamu, Remo North, and Ikenne.

In a statement signed by its State Chairman, Otunba Arc Kayode Adebayo, the party alleged that the exercise was marred by heavy gunfire, harassment of voters, and intimidation of electoral officers. The PDP described the incidents as “a direct assault on the democratic rights of the people.”

The opposition party further accused the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) of complicity, claiming security operatives focused more on harassing opposition members rather than apprehending those behind the violence.

The PDP Chairman himself was reportedly arrested in his hotel room in the early hours of election day, a move the party insists was aimed at weakening its structure and creating room for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate the process.

“This blatant attempt to suppress the opposition and undermine the will of the people of Remo is a dangerous precedent,” the statement read. “The Dapo Abiodun administration’s failure to curb this regime of terror is dragging Ogun State back to the dark ages.”

The party demanded a thorough investigation into the conduct of security agencies during the election and called for the immediate release of its chairman and other opposition members allegedly targeted. It also urged Governor Abiodun to take responsibility for the breakdown of order during the poll.

Beyond the state government, the PDP called on civil society organisations, Nigerians, and the international community to take note of what it termed a “descent into lawlessness.”

“The PDP remains committed to defending the mandate of the people and ensuring that democracy thrives. We will not be intimidated,” the statement added.
