Ogunsiji Re-elected Ogun SWAN Chairman, Seeks Revival Of MKO Abiola Stadium’s Night Economy
The Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, has called on the incoming Ogun State administration to revive the night economy at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, describing it as a strategic step towards improving security, recreation and revenue generation.
Ogunsiji made the appeal on Saturday during his acceptance speech after he was re-elected unopposed for a second term at the 12th Ogun SWAN Triennial Delegates’ Congress.
He said restoring commercial and recreational activities within the stadium complex would make the facility more vibrant while creating opportunities for legitimate businesses and boosting the state’s internally generated revenue.
According to him, sports infrastructure should not remain active only during competitions but should serve as economic hubs that contribute to the state’s development throughout the year.
“We urge the incoming administration to restore the night economy within the stadium complex.
“Beyond making the environment more vibrant and habitable, this initiative will enhance security, attract legitimate business activities, encourage recreation and significantly improve the state’s internally generated revenue,” he said.
The SWAN chairman also criticised the continued use of sections of the stadium as a car park and driving practice ground, warning that such activities undermine the primary purpose of the sports facility.
He called for an immediate review of the practice, insisting that the stadium should be preserved as a centre for sports development and talent nurturing.
Ogunsiji further advocated the development of a comprehensive sports masterplan for Ogun State, saying such a policy would strengthen sports infrastructure, promote grassroots talent discovery and create sustainable pathways for athletes.
He noted that sports remain a powerful catalyst for youth development, economic growth, tourism and social cohesion, urging the next administration to maximise the potential of the sector for the benefit of the state.
The SWAN chairman also pledged that the association would continue to advocate policies that promote sports development while collaborating with government and other stakeholders to advance the sector in Ogun State.
