Ogun Govt Urges Calm Amid Flash Floods, Issues Safety Guidelines

The Ogun State Government has appealed to residents not to panic following the ongoing flash floods affecting parts of the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, the government described the floods as a predictable outcome of the rainy season and urged residents to remain calm while adhering to safety advisories.
Dr. Oresanya explained that the reassurance was necessary to discourage panic and to remind the public of precautionary measures aimed at protecting lives and property during the period of increased rainfall.
“Residents are advised to stay indoors during rainfall or, if on the move, to find safe shelter until the rain subsides,” he said.
He further cautioned motorists and commuters against attempting to drive through flooded areas, noting that floodwaters typically recede within one to two hours.
“Community leaders and households must also ensure that all blockages in drainages and canals are cleared to allow free flow of water,” Oresanya added.
The commissioner warned that more torrential rains are expected in the next three weeks, marking the first peak of the rainy season in the state.
In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) or the Flood Emergency Response Teams stationed at their respective local government areas.
He also revealed that Community Development Associations (CDAs) have been mobilised as first responders to assist with flood-related emergencies within their localities.
The state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and urged the public to remain alert and follow official updates.
