A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Hon. Abayomi Hunye, has raised the alarm over an alleged move to withdraw the security personnel attached to him.
Hunye’s Media Director, Femi Oyewale, who signed the statement on behalf of the media office, alleged that pressure was being mounted on security agencies to withdraw the personnel attached to the aspirant.
According to the statement, the alleged pressure was coming from the Office of the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Security, in conjunction with the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The media office described the alleged development as a serious security concern, warning that any withdrawal of Hunye’s security detail could expose him, his family and members of his campaign organisation to potential danger.
It consequently called on the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the APC leadership and other relevant authorities to intervene.
“Credible intelligence available to our campaign structure confirms that strong pressure is currently being mounted by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Security, in active conjunction with the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, on state security agencies to immediately withdraw all security personnel attached to Hon. Abayomi Hunye,” the statement said.
The media office alleged that the move was coming at a critical period in Hunye’s political engagement and described it as an attempt to intimidate the aspirant and undermine his political activities.
It urged security agencies to remain professional and resist any political pressure that could compromise the safety of the aspirant.
The statement further warned that the relevant political authorities would be held accountable if any security incident occurred involving Hunye, his family or members of his campaign team.
“Should any harm, attempt on life, or breakdown of security occur around Hon. Abayomi Hunye, his family, or members of his campaign team, the political leadership of Ogun State, specifically the Office of the Special Adviser on Security and the Office of the SSG, will be held directly responsible by the public and law enforcement,” it said.
The media office, however, said Hunye remained committed to his political aspirations, insisting that alleged attempts to intimidate him would not deter his participation in the political process.
It also appealed to civil society organisations, elder statesmen, political leaders and other stakeholders to take note of what it described as a developing security concern ahead of the 2027 elections.
