The Editor of NewsExtra, Adeyemi Obadimu, popularly known as Veron, has commended the Convener of the Ogun State Progressives New Media Summit and Special Assistant on New Media to Senator Adeola Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, Omooba Damilare Oloyede, for bringing together bloggers, journalists, social media influencers and other digital media practitioners from across Ogun State.
Obadimu described the summit as a timely initiative capable of strengthening professionalism, collaboration and the responsible use of new media, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The summit, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, attracted participants from different parts of Ogun State and provided a platform for stakeholders in the digital media space to discuss the changing dynamics of political communication, misinformation, ethical journalism and the strategic use of social media.
Commending Oloyede for the initiative, Obadimu said the ability to bring together practitioners from different local government areas demonstrated the growing importance of collaboration within the state’s new media ecosystem.
He said the gathering was significant because it allowed bloggers, journalists, influencers, content creators and political communicators to interact beyond their individual platforms and discuss issues affecting the profession.
According to him, “Omooba Damilare Oloyede deserves commendation for putting together a summit of this magnitude and bringing practitioners from across Ogun State under one roof.
“It is encouraging to see bloggers, journalists, influencers and other new media practitioners coming together to exchange ideas and discuss how we can collectively contribute to a more responsible and professional digital media environment.
“This is the kind of initiative that should be encouraged because the influence of new media on public opinion and political discourse can no longer be ignored.”
Obadimu noted that the discussions at the summit were particularly relevant at a time when social media has become a major avenue for political communication and public engagement.
He stressed that while digital platforms provide opportunities for wider reach and faster dissemination of information, practitioners must also recognise the responsibility that comes with such influence.
The NEWSEXTRA Editor said the emphasis placed on truth, professionalism, responsible content creation and legal awareness during the summit was commendable, adding that political communication should not be allowed to undermine journalistic ethics or the rights of individuals.
He also called for stronger cooperation among media practitioners across Ogun State, saying collaboration would enable them to share knowledge, improve their professional standards and better serve the public.
Obadimu further urged political leaders and government officials to maintain regular engagement with new media practitioners rather than limiting their relationship with digital platforms to election periods.
He said credible new media platforms could play an important role in communicating government policies, programmes and achievements while also providing citizens with access to information and opportunities for engagement.
He equally encouraged bloggers and social media influencers to embrace continuous learning, fact-checking and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, while ensuring that speed does not take precedence over accuracy.
“The new media space is changing rapidly. Those who want to remain relevant must continue to learn and adapt. But whatever technology we use, credibility must remain the foundation of our work,” he said.
Obadimu congratulated Oloyede and the organising team on the successful summit, describing the initiative as a positive development for Ogun State’s media community.
He expressed hope that the summit would be sustained as a regular platform for networking, capacity building and professional engagement among new media practitioners across the state.
He said the participation of stakeholders from different parts of Ogun demonstrated the willingness of practitioners to work together towards building a stronger, more credible and responsible new media ecosystem in the state.
