JUST IN: Atiku Abubakar Resigns From PDP, Says Party Has Deviated From Founding Principles

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long affiliation with the party he helped to establish.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.

“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” the former Vice President wrote. “As a founding father of this esteemed party, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku, who served two terms as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was the PDP presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the party gave him over the years.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he noted.

While acknowledging the “irreconcilable differences” that informed his decision, Atiku wished the party and its leadership success in the future.

The letter, signed by Atiku and acknowledged on July 14, 2025, by Hammadama Abubakar, marks a major shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
