Former Inspector-General Of Police, Solomon Arase Is Dead

Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Ehigiator Arase has died at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja.

Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, later became Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), a position he held until June 2024.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, he joined the Nigeria Police Force on December 1, 1981, after graduating in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University. He also obtained a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.

Before his appointment as IGP, Arase headed the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau. He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence.

He retired from the Force on June 21, 2016, upon reaching the statutory retirement age. In January 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

Arase also managed the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), which awarded scholarships to students, including children of deceased police officers. In 2025, the foundation announced 29 new beneficiaries across various academic disciplines.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
