Awolowo Market: Sagamu Chairman Warns Traders, Transport Operators Against Disorder And Road Obstruction

The Chairman of Sagamu Local Government has directed traders and transport operators at Awolowo Market to maintain orderliness, sanitation and proper use of public facilities, warning that roadside trading and the misuse of market spaces will no longer be tolerated.
The directive was issued during a stakeholders’ meeting with the Awolowo Market Board, the Iya Oloja, Baba Oloja, members of the market executive, representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), road transport stakeholders and the Ogun State Parks and Garages Management (OGSPAM) Awolowo Branch.
Speaking at the meeting, the chairman stressed the need to clearly distinguish between the functions of the market and the garage to ensure effective management of both facilities.
“The market and the garage serve different purposes and must not be mixed. The garage is for transport activities, while the market is strictly for trading. Everyone must operate within the appropriate space to ensure proper organisation,” he said.
The chairman also emphasised the importance of maintaining a clean and orderly environment, directing all traders and transport operators to stop occupying the main road.
“All traders and transport operators must desist from occupying the main road. Every form of obstruction will be removed to guarantee the free flow of traffic and enhance public safety,” he warned.
He further disclosed that shops allocated to individuals but left unoccupied would be recovered and reassigned to genuine traders in need of business spaces.
“Shops allocated to individuals but left unused will be recovered and reallocated to genuine traders who are in need of them. Public facilities must be utilised for the purpose for which they were provided,” he stated.
Calling for cooperation among stakeholders, the council chairman urged traders, transport unions and market leaders to work collectively towards sustaining peace, discipline and mutual respect within the market.
“A clean, peaceful and well-organised market is beneficial to everyone, and I am confident that with the cooperation of all concerned, we can achieve a more organised and thriving Awolowo Market,” he added.
