Sagamu LG Holds Emergency Meeting With IBEDC Over Prolonged Blackout
The Sagamu Local Government has convened an emergency meeting with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, following the persistent power outage affecting Sagamu and neighbouring communities.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Jubril Afolabi Odulate, expressed deep concern over the prolonged blackout, describing it as a serious disruption to businesses, public institutions and daily life across the town.
He noted that the outage has generated widespread complaints from residents and has become a pressing issue for the local administration, necessitating urgent engagement with the electricity distribution company.
Responding on behalf of IBEDC, the Business Manager of the Sagamu Business Hub, Mr Olusegun Ebinowen, stated that the company is actively working to resolve the situation. He disclosed that public sensitisation efforts have commenced to keep residents informed about the technical challenges responsible for the outage. According to him, a town crier has been deployed to communicate updates and reassure the public that restoration efforts are ongoing.
Providing further clarification, the Technical Engineer of the Sagamu Business Hub, Mr Isaac Boyenle, explained that the fault extends beyond Sagamu and is also affecting major towns such as Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode and Mowe. He said the widespread nature of the technical problem requires coordinated intervention across multiple locations, making immediate restoration challenging.
When asked to provide a timeline for the return of electricity, the IBEDC technical team said a definite date could not yet be given. They, however, assured residents that updates would be promptly communicated once supply stabilises and clearer information becomes available.
The meeting concluded with the local government reaffirming its commitment to closely monitor developments and sustain engagement with IBEDC until normal power supply is restored.
Chairman Odulate also appealed to the company to suspend disconnections and halt the issuance of electricity bills during the blackout period. In response, the Business Manager agreed that disconnections would be suspended and billing temporarily paused until the situation improves.
