NFF Endorse Official Name Change For Nigerian League
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has granted formal approval for the renaming of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League, Readership NG reports.
This pivotal decision came to fruition during the NFF’s 79th general assembly, which took place on Sunday, September 10, 2023, in Uyo, marking a significant milestone in Nigerian football.
In the lead-up to the 2023-2024 football season, as anticipation grew, the newly formed NPFL board proactively rebranded the league to the Nigeria Premier Football League and unveiled a fresh league logo. However, this transformation was executed without prior authorization from the NFF, prompting a swift response from the governing body of Nigerian football.
In response to the unauthorized alterations, the NFF issued a statement asserting its exclusive authority to approve such significant changes. Consequently, this matter was formally presented and discussed during the NFF’s general assembly.
After in-depth deliberations and a comprehensive meeting, the NFF communicated through a communique, “The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.”
The highly anticipated commencement of the 2023-2024 NPFL season, initially set to kick off with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan on a Saturday, faced a postponement just days before its scheduled start due to sponsorship-related requirements, as reported by the league’s board of directors.
With the official endorsement of the name change, football enthusiasts across Nigeria now eagerly await the revised start date for the Nigeria Premier Football League. Teams like Enyimba Football Club of Aba, the reigning champions, will have ample time to prepare for their title defense this season, especially as they have been eliminated from the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.
