Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Dies Following Tragic Car Accident In Spain
The world of football is in mourning as Diogo Jota, Liverpool forward and Portugal international, died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28.
The fatal crash happened in the early hours of Thursday on the A52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the Zamora province. According to Spanish emergency services, Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, 25, were travelling in a Lamborghini Huracán when the car veered off the road. Reports indicate that a tyre burst while they were overtaking another vehicle, causing the car to crash and burst into flames. Both brothers died at the scene.
The tragedy occurred just two weeks after Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. They had three children together. The couple recently celebrated their wedding publicly, with Jota describing himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”
Born in Massarelos, Portugal, Diogo Jota began his professional career with Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atlético Madrid. He rose to stardom at Wolverhampton Wanderers and later joined Liverpool in 2020.
Since arriving at Anfield, Jota became a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad. He scored 47 goals in 123 appearances for the Reds and played a key role in Liverpool’s 2024 and 2025 Premier League title triumph. He also helped the club win the FA Cup and EFL Cup in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.
His brother André Silva was also a professional footballer, playing for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Liverpool Football Club expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Diogo was not just a player, he was family. We are devastated by his loss and our hearts go out to his wife, children, and loved ones.”
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also released a statement, calling Jota’s death a heartbreaking loss to both the nation and the sport.
Football figures across the globe paid tribute to the fallen star. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jamie Carragher, Luis Figo, and Dele Alli were among many who honored Jota’s legacy, describing him as humble, hardworking, and supremely talented.
Fans gathered outside Anfield and in cities across Portugal, lighting candles and laying scarves, shirts, and flowers in his memory.
The Portuguese Football Federation has requested a moment of silence before all domestic matches this weekend. UEFA also observed a minute of silence before the Women’s European Championship match between Portugal and Germany.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into the crash. Early reports suggest the accident was caused by a rear tyre blowout while the vehicle was speeding on the highway.
By the time emergency services arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Both bodies were recovered and are expected to be returned to Portugal after autopsy procedures in Zamora.
At 28, Diogo Jota had already built a remarkable football career. Known for his sharp instincts, versatility, and fearless play, he won the hearts of millions around the world.
He is survived by his wife Rute, their three children, and a grieving family. Though his time was cut short, his impact on the game and the people around him will never be forgotten.
May Diogo Jota and André Silva rest in peace.
