Court Remands Ogun NUJ Secretary Over Alleged Kidnap, Assault Of Police Officer

A Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, has remanded the Secretary of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Adigun Bunmi, at the Ibara Correctional Centre over allegations of kidnapping and assault of a police officer.

Mr. Bunmi was arraigned before the court following a dramatic late-night incident at the Kemta Division of the Ogun State Police Command on Thursday, December 18, 2025. The court granted him bail in the sum of ₦1.5 million, but he was unable to meet the bail conditions, leading to his remand in custody.

The case has been adjourned to January 21, 2026, for further hearing.

According to police sources, the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. when operatives on stop-and-search duty in front of the Kemta Police Station flagged down a blue Toyota Camry with registration number OG 16 A43. The driver was identified as Mr. Bunmi.

Police alleged that the NUJ secretary conducted himself in a disorderly manner, prompting officers to direct him to bring the vehicle into the station. He was said to have refused to comply and allegedly drove off with a police officer, Constable Adebayo Okikijesu, who had entered the vehicle to ensure compliance.

The situation reportedly escalated until the intervention of Kehinde Adebayo, a driver to a retired Superintendent of Police, Adeakiti, who pursued and blocked the vehicle about 200 metres from the checkpoint. In the process, Constable Okikijesu sustained an injury to his arm.

Mr. Bunmi was subsequently arrested and charged with alleged kidnapping, serious assault on a police officer, and deprivation of liberty.

Efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, for official comments were unsuccessful as her line remained unreachable as of the time of filing this report. Similarly, repeated attempts to contact the Chairman of the Ogun NUJ Council proved abortive, as calls were neither answered nor returned.
