Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Lagos, have arrested four suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate allegedly terrorising residents around the Iju-Ishaga–Oke Aro axis of Lagos State.

The operation also led to the recovery of 25 mobile phones, two laptops, gold earrings, a gold necklace and three cutlasses.

The suspects, identified as Damilare Oluwatobi, 28; Lekan Adenuga, 30; Haruna Sheriff, 22; and David Balogun, 24, were arrested at their hideout in the Idi-Oro area of Mushin following an intelligence-driven operation.

The operation was launched after the VCRU received a distress call concerning an armed robbery incident and the alleged dispossession of residents of their valuables.

According to the VCRU Commander, CSP Oyindamola, detectives immediately commenced an investigation, leveraging intelligence and available camera recordings to trace the suspects.

The investigation eventually paid off at about 1:40 p.m. when the four suspects were identified and apprehended at their hideout in Idi-Oro.

Preliminary interrogation, according to the Unit, led to confessional statements from the suspects, who allegedly admitted their involvement in the robbery operation and disclosed that the gang operated with two locally made pistols and three cutlasses.

A subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of 25 mobile phones, two laptops, gold earrings, a gold necklace and three cutlasses.

Efforts are ongoing to recover the firearms allegedly used by the gang and establish the ownership of the recovered valuables.

The development is significant given the notoriety of Idi-Oro, Mushin, as an area associated with the movement and disposal of stolen mobile phones, electronic devices and other valuables.

The operation underscores the importance of intelligence, technology and rapid investigative response in contemporary policing. Rather than waiting for criminal incidents to escalate, the VCRU is increasingly deploying intelligence and available technological leads to identify suspects, trace their movements and disrupt criminal networks at their points of operation.

The Violent Crime Response Unit is one of the operational innovations established under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of his broader vision of strengthening intelligence-driven, proactive and technology-supported policing in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Police Force has identified intelligence-led deployment and enhanced investigative capacity as key components of the VCRU’s mandate.

The latest Lagos breakthrough therefore represents more than the arrest of four suspects. It is another practical demonstration of the shift towards proactive crime prevention, intelligence gathering and targeted intervention.

Across the country, the Nigeria Police Force has continued to report operational gains from intelligence-driven policing, including arrests of suspects linked to armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, murder and cultism, as well as the recovery of firearms, ammunition and stolen vehicles and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

For the VCRU, the Lagos operation reinforces a simple message: criminal hideouts are no longer safe havens, and stolen property cannot simply disappear into the criminal ecosystem.
