OOU Students Allege Police Assault, Gunfire During Protest

The Olabisi Onabanjo University Students’ Union Government (OOUSUG) has accused officers of the of assaulting student leaders and firing shots at unarmed students during a protest at the Oru-Ijebu Police Station in Ogun State.

The union, in a statement co-signed by its President, , and General Secretary, , said the incident began when students protested the arrest of some members under “unclear and questionable” circumstances.

According to the statement, the SUG Legal Director went to the station to verify the situation and engage the police lawfully. “Shockingly, while carrying out his legitimate duty, our legal director was subjected to degrading treatment — he was physically assaulted, kicked, and violently manhandled, including being choked by officers,” the union said.

The statement added that another student present at the station was also assaulted. When the SUG President and other leaders arrived to de-escalate the situation, police allegedly responded with force, shooting at students and causing injuries and panic.

“Without justification, they opened fire on unarmed students. In the course of this unwarranted aggression, a student was shot on the hand; several students were brutalised and assaulted; multiple students were unlawfully arrested; panic and chaos were deliberately instigated through continuous gunfire,” the union said.

The union described the incident as an abuse of power and demanded an immediate investigation, prosecution of officers involved, medical treatment and compensation for injured students, and the unconditional release of any detained individuals.

The Ogun State Police Command, however, denied the allegations in a statement signed by its spokesperson, , stating that no student was detained following the confrontation.

The conflicting accounts highlight ongoing tension between the students and law enforcement in Ogun State, with both sides maintaining different versions of events at the Oru-Ijebu division.
