Six PDP Lawmakers Defect As APC Gains Full Control Of Ogun Assembly

In a significant political development, six members of the Ogun State House of Assembly, previously elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), giving the party complete control of the 26-member legislature.

Following the 2023 elections, APC initially secured 17 seats while the PDP won nine constituencies. However, legal and political shifts over the past three years gradually reduced PDP representation. In November 2023, the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos nullified the election of Babajide Owoduni of the PDP, representing Ikenne State Constituency, declaring Kunle Sobukola of the APC the rightful winner. This reduced PDP lawmakers from nine to eight.

Subsequently, in 2025, two PDP lawmakers, Rasheed Kashamu (Ijebu North I) and Lukman Atobatele (Abeokuta South I), had defected to the APC, leaving six PDP members in the opposition.

The latest defection now sees all six remaining PDP lawmakers joining the APC. The defectors are:

  • Lukman Adeleye (Odogbolu), Minority Leader
  • Bello Oluwadamilare (Sagamu I)
  • Lawal Samusideen (Ogun Waterside)
  • Adesanya Oluseun Samuel (Ijebu North-East)
  • Owode Waliu Ifedolapo (Ijebu East)
  • Dickson Kolawole Awolaja (Remo North)

The lawmakers reportedly formalized their defection during the recently concluded APC National Convention in Abuja. The transition is expected to be officially announced during a plenary session in the coming week.

The Ogun State PDP has not yet issued any official response to the development.

Political observers say the shift underscores APC’s consolidation of power in Ogun State and signals a strengthened position ahead of the 2027 elections.
