Ogun Govt Moves Against Environmental Abuse, Warns Offenders Of Stiff Penalties

The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the state, cautioning that offenders now risk heavy fines and possible imprisonment.

The warning was delivered on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Hon. Abayomi Hunye, who expressed concern over the growing habit of residents, particularly those in markets disposing waste in drainages, streets and other unauthorized locations. He described the practice as dangerous, environmentally harmful, and a threat to public health.

Hunye noted that the government had, in recent weeks, observed a surge in careless waste disposal despite the existence of designated refuse points in all approved markets. He stressed that such disregard for proper waste management would no longer be tolerated.

He reminded the public of the provisions of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law, 2020, which prescribes penalties for violators. According to Section 34(1) of the law, anyone found guilty of contravening waste management regulations is liable, upon arrest, to pay a penalty of ₦25,000. Failure to comply may lead to prosecution in court, where the offender risks a maximum fine of ₦2 million, a three-month imprisonment term, or both.

“The Ogun State Government can no longer tolerate the pernicious practice of dumping waste indiscriminately,” the statement read. “All approved markets have designated areas and containers for refuse disposal, yet many people continue to dump waste anywhere they please, jeopardizing public health.”

He added that enforcement would now be intensified to ensure full compliance with the law and restore cleanliness across the state.
