Ogun PDP Condemns Abiodun’s Alleged Control Of LGA Funds

The Ogun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Governor Dapo Abiodun for unilaterally approving Constituency Projects for 236 serving councillors across the state, cautioning against his interference in Local Government (LG) funds.

In a press statement released by the Publicity Secretary of the Ogun PDP, Asiwaju Akinloye Bankole, the party expressed deep concern over what it referred to as a “laughable achievement” by the Abiodun-led administration. The statement accused the governor of contradicting previous claims that the state government had no influence over the finances and administration of LGs.

The PDP statement emphasized that Governor Abiodun’s approval of the constituency projects for councillors, without constitutional backing, is a clear violation of the autonomy of Local Governments. The party questioned the source of the governor’s authority to make such decisions, highlighting the constitutional mandate for local council chairmen to present budgets, including constituency projects, to their Legislative Assembly for approval.

The PDP condemned the governor’s actions as a “show of crude power,” labeling it as “appalling, disgraceful, and condemned in its entirety.” The party accused Governor Abiodun of committing “serious gross misconduct” and called on stakeholders, civil servants, traditional institutions, youth and student bodies, artisans, and the general public to unite in opposition.

Furthermore, the statement expressed skepticism about the ability of the Ogun State House of Assembly to check the governor’s actions, describing them as “compromised and irredeemably inactive.” The PDP asserted that urgent intervention from the people is essential to prevent the further erosion of Local Government administrations.

As the controversy unfolds, the PDP accuses the governor of a “show of crude power” and condemns his actions as a gross misconduct. The party contends that the move undermines the statutory powers of Local Government administrations and demonstrates a disregard for due process.

The press release also echoes the allegations made by Wale Adedayo, a former Local Government boss, who accused Governor Abiodun of reckless diversion and embezzlement of Local Government funds. The PDP claims that the governor’s recent actions only reinforce these accusations.

The PDP calls on all stakeholders, including civil servants, traditional institutions, youth and student bodies, artisans, and the general public, to unite against what they describe as Governor Abiodun’s “obnoxious overbearing attitude” towards Local Government affairs. The party expresses concern about the perceived inaction of the Ogun State House of Assembly and emphasizes the urgent need for collective action to prevent further erosion of Local Government autonomy.
