Dr Olukoya’s Lawyers Threaten Contempt Action Against Maureen Badejo

Legal representatives of Dr Daniel Olukoya, General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), have issued a fresh warning to Maureen Badejo, cautioning her against actions that allegedly violate a standing order of the UK High Court restraining her from making defamatory statements against Dr Olukoya and his wife.

The warning follows what Dr Olukoya’s legal team described as a renewed campaign of false and malicious allegations by Badejo, despite a court judgment delivered against her in April 2021.

According to court records, Dr Daniel Olukoya and his wife, Dr (Mrs) Folasade Olukoya, instituted defamation proceedings against Maureen Badejo in October 2020 over allegations bordering on dishonesty and sexual misconduct. Badejo filed a defence claiming the allegations were true.

However, in April 2021, the UK High Court struck out her defence, ruling that it disclosed no reasonable grounds and amounted to an abuse of court process. The court subsequently entered summary judgment in favour of the Olukoyas and granted an injunction restraining Badejo from repeating or republishing the allegations.

As part of the judgment, Badejo was also ordered to publish a summary of the court’s decision on her social media platforms, acknowledging that the allegations were false. In October 2021, the court assessed damages and ordered Badejo to pay £65,000 to Dr Olukoya and £35,000 to Mrs Olukoya as compensation.

Despite the subsisting injunction, Dr Olukoya’s lawyers allege that Badejo has recently resumed publishing the same claims that were the subject of the court proceedings. The legal team has now written formally to Badejo, demanding that she immediately cease and desist, remove the offending publications, and issue an apology.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply would result in the commencement of contempt of court proceedings.

“Contempt of court is a grave matter,” the legal team stated, noting that it constitutes a serious breach of the authority of the court and may attract criminal sanctions, including fines or imprisonment.

They stressed that the issue has gone beyond reputational damage and now concerns compliance with a binding High Court order, adding that while Dr Olukoya remains open to an amicable resolution, the injunction must be obeyed.
